This
is an open session and all levels of musicians are welcome to play
traditional Irish music. While mostly tunes will be played, songs are
also welcome. If we get a good turnout, the plan is to have this session
every month on the first Sunday. Please help spread the word so we get a
good showing the first month and help ensure continued availability of an open
Irish session in
The
following session etiquette will make it more enjoyable for everyone:
1. Session format is Round Robin. On your turn, choose a tune, set or song, or
pass.
2. Play tunes that you know, and
listen to tunes you don't know.
3. It is all about the melody. If
you play bodhrán, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin or other rhythm instrument, play
lightly.
4. If we have beginners, the first
hour or so will be slower and easier tunes, possibly played at a slower tempo.
As the afternoon progresses, more difficult tunes will be added.
5. You are encouraged bring a
recording device to record those tunes you do not know, but want to work on at
home.
6. If more than one bodhran, take
turns playing, or all but one bodhran player muffle their drum with left hand so
only they can hear it.
7. If more than one guitar, be
sure to play lightly enough so the melody instruments can still be clearly
heard.
8. Be kind to each other and be
open to suggestions from more experienced players.
9. No amplifiers except for
keyboard.
10. While all should strive to learn by ear and not use sheet music, you may use sheet music at this session.
11. If you play washboard or finger cymbals, leave them at home.
This is a great venue…pub owner Kevin McCready regularly has
bands play and they have a good food, beer & fine whiskey. He has a
dedicated area for musicians which is smoke free and the bar is for smokers so
all will be accommodated.
You may wish to come early or stay late and have
some good food. Owner Kevin McCready serves the best full Irish breakfast
